The phrase carcassing is normally used to refer to timbers processed for use in structural applications, for example; roof battens, floor joists and studwork for partition walls

Imported vs. home grown?

Bedford Timber Supplies carry a wide range and large quantities of carcassing timber, from Sweden and the Baltic states. These timbers are generally preferred to home grown timber because they grow slower overseas, have tighter growth rings and are to a higher standard.

Imported timber is available from sizes 19mm x 38mm up to 300mm x 300mm.

Lengths of imported timber are available from 2.4 meter up to 7.2 meter.

Timber strength and grading

Structural applications require carcassing timber to be marked to show they comply with the correct standards and strength that are stipulated by building codes and regulations. Imported timbers are almost always regularised, kiln dried and graded at the individual sawmills to BS4978 strength classes C16 and C24.

Machine grading at the forest sawmill measures the resistance of the timber member to flexing, which gives a measure of the strength of the piece. Machine grading is carried out to the requirements of BS EN 14081 PARTS 1-4 – this is the European Harmonised Standard for the strength grading of timber for structural purposes.

Additionally we have a TRADA (The Timber Research and Development Association) certified grader who can grade large softwood timbers which we have machined specifically to a customer’s requirements.

Treated timber

All treated carcassing is pressure treated to a minimum hazard class-2 to minimize any deterioration from damp buildings or where used externally from our suppliers. This is added to the timber from source at the mill or at our importers in their own treatment tanks onsite.

If you require a specific treatment application for timber, please check our Pressure Treatment page.
