It all started more than 60 years ago, when Geoffrey Lines began chopping off cuts of wood into kindling to sell in his greengrocer shop in Luton.

Now six decades later, the fourth generation of the Lines family has joined what is now called Bedford Timber, albeit in a slightly more modern role.

Jack Lines, great grandson of Geoffery Lines and grandson of Bedford Timber Managing Director Roger Lines, joined the company in 2021 as Website Developer.

Jack explained: “My Great-Grandfather Geoffrey started the business as GD Lines in 1963 in Cauldwell Walk, Bedford, after the demand for wood products grew rapidly.

“By the mid 1970’s Geoffrey’s son and my granddad, Roger, joined the family business and in 1979 the first Stenner re-saw was installed to machine timber into fencing panels, garden sheds and gates. And in 1981, Bedford Timber was launched.

“It’s been fantastic joining the family business. Since I joined, I have revamped the entire Bedford Timber website and am now working towards a new, fresh St Neots section of the site.”

Today Bedford Timber Supplies is directed by Geoffrey’s son, Roger, alongside sister June, who has worked for the company since 1971, and their partners Liz and Anthony. Roger and Liz’s three children also all play key roles within the company, including Jack’s dad, Gavin.

Bedford Depot Manager, Gavin Lines, explained: “Being a family-run business, with more than half a century of timber knowledge, is what sets Bedford Timber apart and keeps its customers returning again and again.

“It’s been great having Jack join the team and the work he has done on the website has been fantastic.”
